You can drink from most creaks up in the hills but you'd probably want to sterilize it. I've never had problems but maybe I've got a bit of resistance to the local bugs. Also everyone would appreciate it if you bury your shit and pick up after yourself. There's a lot of opportunity to see some beautiful places! Don't miss Lake Tekapo (climb mount john) or Wanaka. I read /trv/ nearly every day so maybe if you post there about Christchurch or Timaru I could show you round.
