I was mainly using Texas rigged plastic worms but also had luck with a roostertail.
Maybe try fishing smaller areas like ponds/rivers/creeks. I really like fishing out of rivers. You never know what you're going to catch and you are usually guaranteed to catch something if you find a good spot.
For best results with river fishing I recommend taking live worms to catch whatever will bite and maybe also some corn for carp or something.
