Each type has wildly varying degrees of hardness, edge retention due to various carbides, toughness from alloying elements as well as heat treatment, and corrosion resistance. Hell, on paper D2 steel has enough chromium to be stainless, but so much of that gets tied up as chromium carbide that it's got absolute shit corrosion resistance. The only reliable comparison is looking at two specific steels, or better yet two specific knives so that heat treatment can be taken into account.
