Kentuckyfag here. For me, it’s the Eastern Hemlock. They have really dense needles that shade out a lot of light in the understory. They’re a key species in what’s called the mesophytic forest that we have in eastern Kentucky. Hemlock groves are a lot cooler than surrounding areas, and they cool down streams running under them which is important for brook trout.
