What are the conditions in New Zealand like during the winter?

I'm from the PNW so that'd be my point of reference. Does it get very cold and rainy like here? You can easily freeze to death if you're caught unprepared in the cascades, how much of a problem could that be in the southern alps?
Should I bring my ice axe and very warm clothing or are those not needed?
