Here's something to try: Elephants exist, and perhaps the inability of Saharan soils to replenish themselves, due to the change in temperature and climate (limiting contributions from flora), the winds moving nutrients off of the continent (to the Mediterranean and Brazil), and the lack of geologic activity in the area, caused the region to gradually desiccate without hope for long-term settlement/management.
