Also, I had a similar situation, but it was at night and a good ways away from town. Inna tarp shelter, asleep, suddenly hear lots of stomping and breaking branches near shelter. Shit bricks, shine flashlight on a large buck staring me straight in the face. I almost shit a brick it was so close. It seemed like it was challenging me, but it ran off after I shouted at it for a bit.
