Like I said, the scales can really vary between bio-regional levels, to an almost urban design scale, right down to a 10x5 courtyard. There are definitly landscape architects out there who don't even know the difference between an ash and an elm. It's a broad enough discipline that you can specialize.
In my capstone project, the planting plan for the master was: fruit bearing trees, street trees, naturalized areas and lawn areas. Not exactly in-depth.
