best way is to do some training, so you know what to bring and what to do. check you local clubs, they often offer cheap group courses. Hunting, and almost all sports clubs do it some what regularly. The place where i S&R volunteer, offers the large (18 hrs course) like 1-2 times a year depending on demand for very little money.
and don't forget even when you don't Know shit, (at least in my country) the people on the emergency line are trained professionals who can talk you trough everything.
