To add to what others have said in this thread. Hunting is indeed best learned hands on, and it's very easy to begin with squirrels, rabbits, and even some birds. Learn traps, and the basics of bows if you want, and you'll certainly be able to feed your child; only getting better with practice and experimentation. I hope you enjoy your first well earned meal.
And don't torture the hunt. One of the main appeals for me is that I don't have to feel guilty about supporting a cruel and unsanitary industry when I want meat. You do it quick, and you do it clean. Keep a hunters code and you're alright in my book.
