>>1734328Not necessarily. We've had a small, 250 L preformed pond (I actually found our model online, see pic related) for over a decade. At first we used the mini fountain it was shipped with but we found it to be useless and only made the water more foggy when used so eventually we stopped using it. The water is crystal clear and filled with life: goldfish (now multiple generations as they lay eggs so we always have little fish around), obviously various insects and larvae like dragonfly nymphs, we've bought various water plants as well, even brought waterweed from an actual nearby pond. We don't put any chemicals in it either. It smells great, as an actual pond should and the fish feel great too from what I can tell. Granted it's practically almost always in the shades (under a pine tree) so the water temp doesn't get too hot.
