I live in Sweden, spend a lot of time alone on the Fjäll (high plains and mountains) decided to spend part of my next paycheck on a Satellite beacon/messenger.
Pretty much set on a Garmin InReach Mini, 97g and uses Iridium Satelite network. Talked to a guy who runs a guide company for a few hours today and told me he stop renting out SPOT beacons or any devices that use Globalstar, sometimes messages would hang for multiple days before they'd show up all at once, SOS would always go through but when people were supposed to or said they'd check in once every 24 hours and haven't been heard from in 72 they'd send out helicopters to the beacons location.
Can connect my phone to the Mini so I don't have to use it's incredibly slow method of typing, I'll have it turned off 99% of the time but I want to be able to hit that SOS button if I ever fuck up or bad luck decides to break my leg in the center. of Sarek in the middle of winter during a prolonged storm when no one is going to be moving around to find me.
Being able to check the weather when the nearest cell service is 5 days March away would be awesome too.
For anyone looking for a decent Map/GPS app on their phone check out Topo GPS, it's worked wonderfully for me.
