More deer are taken east of the Mississippi with .30/30 lever actions then all other cartridge / rifles combined.
Now if OP is for example hunting elk out West and will regularly need to take long range shots, then it might be justified but even then, it's
still probably more gun then he'll need and will encourage him to take bad shots simply because he's got a magnum "Hammer of God" rifle,
more then likely resulting in the animal being wounded and running off to die from infection.
I've got a buddy here in Michigan who hunts with a 7mm Rem Mag rifle simply because he thought it was cool, but I doubt he's ever taken
a shot further then 50 yards away....
The vast majority of hunters don't need a magnum rifle and couldn't use it to its full capability anyway.
