Went out fishing for cisco, and caught this big momma in the middle of the day 10 feet under the ice in 40 FOW. I was using a little 6 inch hand auger and it barely fit through the hole! I have always heard they are only active at night and stay on the bottom, but she came in right after a school of baitfish way up high in the water column. Even stranger was that it was in a smallish inland lake in northern MN, I always thought they only lived in the big lakes around here. A lot of people call them ugly, but I love the colors on them. I feel sort of bad because I fucked its gills up a bit when landing. I didn't want to keep it because it was big enough to have more mercury than I would like, and it was full of eggs for the spawn in a few weeks. I really hope it made it, but I doubt it.
