hiking in the Austrian Alps there are usually two modi in my experience
>locals
>will shout a loud 'hello' at each other in regional dialect, then stop for a minute to make some small talk about how 'the mountain is today' (that's not really translatable, it's sort of like talking about the weather)
>wish each other good luck, a nice day and safe journey
>tourists
>you shout 'hello' at them, they will freeze in place like a confused deer in the headlights
>mutter some sort of shy greeting and huddle past you as fast as their brand new hiking boots and shiny poles can carry them
For me the mountains usually make social interactions easier, I have an easier time talking to people outdoors than say, in a bar
