Splitting wood is the most obvious reason why, but if you were to only have 1 tool with which to process wood, a properly sharp axe will be the most efficient option. Axes require less energy and time when it comes to felling, limbing, and bucking, can be easily and quickly sharpened/maintained/repaired in the field (especially now due to modern saw blade teeth being hardened), and you're also able to process larger pieces of wood. You also have the ability to carve wedges, stakes, etc if needed. It can also be used as a hammer in a pinch. From a weight factor I can see why someone might prefer a saw, or even just personal preference, and I wouldn't fault them for it however. Use the tool that works best for you.
