The main thing is just taking away their food supply, they'll fuck off elsewhere after that, but if there's tons of abandoned houses nearby then who knows what the last owners kept in the pantry.
Killing them only really works if you're able to outpace their birth-rate, which is nigh impossible when they have like twelve pups per litter and hundreds of females per community. It's more likely that they'll just avoid the areas you keep killing them in and give you the illusion of progress; they're pretty smart animals (hence why they keep avoiding the traps).
