I was planning to do a similar thing last summer, even with a 6ft staff(I wont use it for my next adventure). You can mod a slingshot to shoot arrows(just like in my picture).
I recommend buying a military poncho, a foldable water carrier, thermos and the best Canadian survival manual you can find. The boots you are wearing are very important, try walking long distances with them before you start your journey. If you don't have a lot of experience don't choose your gear based on some historical value or coolness factor, choose your gear based on its practical value.
