So you cut them, or you let them burn. Stephen Pyne talks about 50-million-acre pre-settlement fire seasons, so letting it burn is pretty unattractive. The other side of the argument is that USFS-sponsored logging operations are often accused of taking too many big living trees because it's more profitable. Additionally, nearby residents are (understandably) usually unhappy about prescribed burns--wood smoke really is bad for you, and prescribed burns have been known to get out of control. As usual, there's no One Weird Trick to reconcile the various competing interests here.
