Oil does burn slightly dirtier in sub freezing than in warm, but it still burns, and it's not volatile like gas or alcohol, and if you spill a lantern the oil will douse the fire because it can't burn without a proper wick. When you look at all the different firelight options; gas, alcohol, wax, and oil, the clear winners (in terms of reliability) are oil and wax. And man nothing's comfier than a clean burning oil lantern in winter, or just in the dark in general. It's winter where I am rn and I've my oil lantern burning on the mantle just for comfies. I hope to hand this lantern down when I die.
