>be me doing field work in central american jungle with two other people>I'm the de facto leader since I have the most experience, so I have the GPS>walking down roads to get to one of our data collection sites>roads covered in tree falls, find some junctions that don't appear on the map, massive thunderstorm slows us down a bit>takes us a while to get to our destination, already late in the day>choice is to go the long way back or follow a route that should exist but we're not sure if it does>decide to risk it and take the supposedly quick way back, since turning around would mean finishing well after dark>road that we're on stops, but GPS says there's another road 300m through the jungle that should get us back to our truck>start bushwhacking>one of the people I'm with is a woman, and it's her third day in-country ever>light starting to dim as we bushwhack, she starts freaking out>screeching at me that we're lost and will have to sleep in the jungle>I calmly show her the GPS, where we are, where the road should be, and where our vehicle is>"We're not lost, I know where we are, it's just a matter of busting through the vegetation" I say>She continues to freak the fuck out>Turns out everything I said was right and we got back safely before dark>She was still pissed thoughTo be fair, it was supposed to be a 10km day and it ended up being like 25km total. I always knew where we were, but didn't know the exact route to take to get out, and the other two were basically following me blindly.
Pic related. Navigating through this shit sucked.
