This whole thing is classic Greek hubris manifest. Nothing about this bizarre incident gives me any joy whatsoever, but they put their enthusiasm and "can do" way ahead of care. To call it an accident would be a grey area, we have the technology, expertise, and ability to engineer and test and certify this shit as relatively~ safe and they deliberately forewent that process because they were, frankly, foolhardy. Their deaths aren't historical, but seeing as fewer people have been to this depth in the ocean than have been to space, the lack of duty of care and spectacular failure of this is in some small way historical. Poor cunts. Also I think it's clear the reason the US Navy and the US/CAN Coast Guards took such an interest wasn't just because they do have a mission statement to help when they are able, it's also because a mysterious disaster occurred underwater and those things are treated as security interests until proven otherwise.
