Spend a lot of time innawoods.
A good trick is to never look directly at the ground, but to always scan. Look for slight disturbances in the leaves, when you develope the skill well, you'll see the small trails left by critters.
My best suggestion is to go with someone, have them walk into the woods, wait 10 minutes, see if you can follow them.
