It's going to depend on breed heavily obviously, but just training it to be calm and stay near you in public is going to cover most cases. Pic related has hiked off leash on mountains with 100m drops but has never worried me since I keep my distance from the edge. Good recall is also smart to train so you can leash up in any dodgy situations.

Probably gonna depend heavily on the breed but just training them to be calm and stay near you while in public are the most important traits to teach a dog that you plan on taking on off leash hikes often. Pic related has been off leash on mountains with 100m drop offs and has never worried me because i always keep my distance from the edge.
