The other day when our house was tagged the neighbors were home and thankfully tagged over the dumb shit for us. I introduced myself and explained my position and objective like I do to everyone. We talked for about 30 minutes and I took away that while they weren't exactly the happiest with having squatters next door, they weren't going to call the cops because were were there. They were also happy with my efforts to clean it up and told me that they'd keep an eye on the place.
As I mentioned before, they called the owner the next morning and told him about us being there and our efforts to clean it. I heard them vouch for me to the owner, over the phone, before he hung up the phone and we actually began talking. I get the feeling they called him to make sure that he met me, since they'd asked me what time I'd be there in the morning.
I also met a guy who lives on the other side in the motel-apartments, he told me about the neighbors in the motel-apartments, about the manager of them, and that he'd also keep an eye out for anything suspicious. That guy actually came in and smoked with us, he was in his early seventies.
