You'll learn more from a day in the field with someone experienced than in a week alone with a book. Even with a good key, there is no comparison. Look for local clubs or societies, most do local meets regularly during the season. Unless you're completely socially retarded, you'll probably find that mushroom hunters a pretty friendly, down-to-earth lot.
