On flatland you would need to be over the water table. Else you end up with a pool instead of a house.
And everything else from above (rain/snow) gets run of by the sloped roof and can disperse in the earth by patios that are dug out at the same level as the floor in the house.
For the digging by hand here is a section from his book:
