personally I would get a backpacking stove like a knockoff pocketrocket or kovea spider, that way you can bring it with you hiking as well.
If you want to simulate a home stove, go to your local chinatown and get one of those chinese hotpot stoves, you should be able to get a chinkshit one for $20. The fuel is cheap too, usually $5 for a pack of 4 butane canisters (lasts an hour each)
