The old mouthpiece is celluloid, which gives off a smell like Vicks vapo rub when it breaks down, and I had been smelling that from the moment I got it. I found a couple of tapered vulcanite mouthpiece blanks on the Internet and a pack of 1200 grit sandpaper at the hardware store.
Time to do some whittling.
