I did not read the VN. My friend played them and loves Higurashi, so he convinced me to watch the anime with him. He had to rewatch the original anime with me so I could be caught up for GouSotsu airing.
I find out that I do not handle cute girls being tortured, abused, and gruesomely killed very well, so I get what need about the plot from the subtitles in these scenes and fastforward through the animations and screaming.
The fun times and comfyness of the non-violent parts is worth it to me.
