I have used it for and it does work fine for batoning though the interwebs are full of guys who broke theirs doing so, that said batoning is hard on any knife.
The leather chord on the handle is just to get a better grip and index the blade and the top of the cross guard has to go, it sucks for choking up on the blade. the paracord on the sheath is just extra cord I used to keep the fire steel with the knife and to have a bit of extra cord.

I often see old boy scout knives like pic, at swap meets and wonder if they are any good if they are cheap enough. look like they would be a good budget /out/ knife
