Intelligence and loyalty are their high marks. All dogs are pretty loyal, but this breed really stands out in that regard. They bond to one person pretty strongly. They’re roughly 20lbs, so I don’t think they’d be very good on long hikes.
This was the most common breed of dog in the US until after WWII. They where a multi-purpose farm dog, ie they hunted rats and followed their owners around during the working day. The former is what they were specifically bred for (hence the name) and the latter was an offshoot when they where repurposed as companions.
