I used to be a geocacher like you, then I took a nano to the knee.
Thing is, it's cancerous to the core. Its very creators only saw in it a potential to make a ton of money, and did everything they could to monetize it
Geocaching used to be great when it was kinda "underground" and few people knew about it. Once it started getting too popular, it became more about showing how much caches you found than the fun of finding them, and pic related appeared, which turned the art of hiding large caches to covering the world with thousands of caches either poorly hidden or near impossible to find. Then it started getting too much about money, with all those tags, coins, and other shit you have to buy...
So if you want to get into geocaching, avoid
geocaching.com as much as you can, and don't waste the slightest money on it. It should be about the pleasure of finding them, not about showing everyone online how much you found or wasting money on pointless stuff.
