The vast majority of the funds that go into conservation, habitat defense, etc. come from hunters. Most 3rd world governments don't give a shit about the animals, but know that, without them, they wouldn't get any hunter money. Hunting is the only thing keeping most endangered species from being wiped out, and their habitats turned into parking lots.
