The school bag that you used in the highschool would be perfectly good to use on day hikes as you develop further both your skills and fitness. The important thing here is for you to actually go /out/ and keep doing it multiple times. If you enjoy it the excitement will always be there, hiking alone in the mountains and reaching the summit is as close to an spiritual experience as one can get. Bottom line is, start fucking do it. Care about gear later.
