Finally a thread I can answer. There is plenty of open space to camp for free, I recommend Buffalo National River as you can backcountry camp anywhere without a permit. The Buffalo River Trail leads into some really nice wilderness areas that I've camped in and I didn't see a single other person for the entire weekend and it was at the end of summer. Mark Twain NF and Ozark NF are also pretty nice but it may be harder to find a level enough spot to camp.
