These "queues" ensue because almost all tourists climb the same south col route essentially on the same day within the same brief time window. Outside this short 'peak hour' at the height of the spring climbing season the mountain is basically completely deserted, not to mention all the other routes that exist on Everest that barely see any climbers anyhow.
