This pic is pretty old, around 2014 I think, maybe older. It’s a feral horse in central Louisiana.
I had hiked about 10 miles and was looking for a place to camp. I’d already passed an ok spot, but decided to keep hiking for a few more miles to see if I’d find something a little better. Having no such luck, I turned back. These horses (about 6; four adults and two young) where right at the spot. I snapped a few pictures and watched them eat. Something spooked them and they bolted off into the woods.
Now I see wildlife all the time, mostly just deer, snakes (plenty of snakes here, both venomous and not), and feral hogs. Occasionally I’ll see something out of the ordinary, but nothing like this.
I’d heard they have feral horses in the area but it’s like a myth. It’s always a “friend of a friend” who saw them, or one of those tales that doesn’t really seem believable (like the stories of solid black panthers that people swear they really did see). It was quit a surprise to see them.
