using a "steel" on your blades does not sharpen them. the purpose of a "steel" is to straighten the edge of the blade. a "steel" removed kinks and bends that an edge gets during everyday use.
to sharpen a blade, you must use something akin to a whetstone, grinder (a bit drastic), or a ceramic sharpening kit. there are other ways to sharpen a blade, but i just mentioned some more popular ways.
pic unrelated. i make knives. that particular blank was made out of a rasp file that i annealed in a camp fire. im waiting for the snow here to go away so i can fire up the forge and finish it.
