They need to grow up together and become resistant to diseases together and form a pecking order together...etc. A single chicken will be a very unhappy chicken. Plus if a predator kills your chicken (and you'll probably lose a few before you get better at keeping the predators away) you won't have any chickens left.
By the way, don't expect the chooks to do all the work, they need you to dig around and help them find tasty buggies in the dirt. They'll love you for it!
