If you want an unconventional way of starting a fire, FINE, but it's definitely not the best way. When I go camping I bring a BIC Lighter - it produces a flame instantly, reliably, and will last for about half an hour continuously. It takes about 3-5 seconds to light kindling. That gives you about SIX HUNDRED opportunities to light a fire reliably. Ferro rods? You often need to bring starter fuel (wetfire, etc.) to even get something going. "Oh! But wut if yer lytur getz wet!?"
1. If you drop it in water, shake it off, and it will light.
2. If it doesn't light, dry it out for a few minutes and it will light up. I went diving for about an hour with a lighter in my pocket and it took a few minutes to dry out and light up.
