also some type of flies will be heavier or have more wind resistance, so you want more strength than usually prescribed for the size
unless you're planning on fishing small stuff on small flies you shouldn't hesitate going for the 8wt
but if you find something cheap second hand between 5 and 8wt it should cover most basic needs regardless
