>>2184205Organic hippie here, Three Sisters is quite effective but it's not some miracle technique that makes crazy yields or anything, it's more about growing things that complement each other and don't compete so you can get a lot of different food from a small space. As for your points I'll clear them up a bit:
1. Legumes DO actually add nitrogen to the soil as their roots grow, die back, and grow again naturally, but it's a pitiful amount compared to what you get by digging them into the soil. The beans aren't there to add nitrogen, it's more that you're growing something alongside the corn that won't compete with it for nitrogen.
2. The squash don't reaally fight for root space in a Three Sisters setup because traditionally the corn and beans are on top of a mound and the squash are planted towards the bottom. Good thing too, because squash are fucking hardcore and would kick the corn's ass.
3. Cane poles don't make food, and corn does.
