>>1426149That being said, there are some cool /out/ use cases for VHF/ UHF radios.
As a licensed amateur, you can use local radio repeaters and extend your conversation from being relayed locally to around the world!
(IRLP, Echolink, Plain Repeating)
Line of sight comms with your buddies.
Bouncing comms off satellites while in the woods is very operator.
Beaconing/ Text Messaging/ APRS/
Without a license there are still some /out/ things to do.
- Monitor Emergency Services.
- If you're in Canada, the weather is broadcasted country wide with VHF.
- Receive pictures from space.
A neat thing to try with your shortwave radio is receive weather faxes.

If your radio has the ability to listen to SSB, I'm jealous. I think that's a really good feature for an /out/ radio. That way you can listen to international news (AM) and international shitposting (SSB)
Personally, I bring the BitX40 that I built in a box that has the microphone, speaker, battery able to fit inside. I throw a dipole antenna up in a tree and I'm talking 200-800Km away, or just listening. (The bitx40 will need an AGC mod before it becomes a comfortable listening radio)
Actually, most radios benifit from some AGC I.M.O
Sorry about the ramble. Have a nice day! Despite the tone of the writing, I really do wish you the best of luck on your adventures.
