I used to mess around with abds and backup knots and ropes in backpacks. I finally ended up with the "bulletproof" clove hitch. I don't know if it's a good idea or not, but I use this without backup knots because it can't come undone (i don't know if the ridge of the atc would cut the rope, but I doubt it).
Now I'm contending with making a shock absorbing ground anchor without extra gear - I'm thinking a combination of a super munter and a friction hitch, I'll post more on that later.
Also, how's your aid climbing? Seems you could have just hung off the highest piece and sorted things out.
