Don't buy into the megapixels-meme. You want a physically large sensor - that's what captures the photons and you want the surface area to capture all teh photons you can.
Megapixels generally goes with the larger sensor, but consider the size of a cameraphone sensor with 8-12mp, vs. an APS-C or FX-sized sensor with 8-12mp.
The camera itself is small, but that's still an APS-C crop sensor... same size found in the Canon APS-C cameras (all your entry-line "crop" sensors) and Nikon's DX-format cameras.
"Full-frame" (Nikon calls it "FX") 35mm sensors are expensive, and the glass that goes onto them is expensive. Typically only find that in the high-end professional lines.
Sony's always had pretty good sensors/optics.
My throwaround point-and-shoot is an ancient DSC-H5. I've had a few photos I took with that camera printed in magazines recently.
