>all these people posting gun images found on google, or guns without slingsprotip: There really is no "best" rifle for all people and all situations, although there are plenty of bad ones. The best rifle is something hard wearing, reliable, and powerful enough to reliably stop the largest local predators, but cheap enough to practice with on a semi-regular basis.
Everything else is an aesthetic choice based upon your own needs or preferences for durability, weight, and quality of life factors that all balance against one another and ultimately, your budget. Light, durable rifles with lots of features are rarely cheap, while cheap, reliable rifles like the 91/30 are neither light weight nor do they compare well against modern rifles in terms of ease of use or safety. That said, if you're poor as shit and going to be rubbing nickles together to buy a gun, a 91/30 is far better than no gun at all.
Overall, a AR-15, SKS, or AK pattern is 100% fine (maybe preferable) if you're hiking in areas with mountain lions or black bears. If you're in Grizzly land (or want something that will be useful across all of North America, you'll probably want a .30 cal rifle, 12 ga. or .45-70.
