I've always gone for shorter cut alpine jackets. Currently have a goretex Macpac Prophet for many years, the last of the NZ made ones before they got sold and moved production to China.
It's getting pretty tired now, so I'll get one of these soon. If you need something durable and really well thought out, these guys don't fuck around.
