>>959344It depends, it's forbidden in several places such as natural reserves, beaches and "sites classés" (which are protected natural or man made areas). Some of these places are beautiful but very touristy so camping isn't great anyway, others are more secluded so it's worth it.
Camping in national parks is ok as far as I know since they aren't the same categories as the places I mentionned above.
But anyway I've camped in forbidden places many times and never had any problems. Except in national parks where camping is authorized we don't really have people like park rangers who tour the place to ensure the law is applied, unless you camp right next to a road you'll be fine. I've also camped on beaches, you just gotta know where the hidden ones are and no one will bother you, just don't set camp in the middle of a beach in Nice during tourist season obviously
As most of Western Europe it's never really far from civilization like you'd be in the middle of Montana, but it's still easily possible to spend some days /out/ without being bothered
