Doesn't feel as awkward as it may seem.
You just have to make sure and not ride up on the grip too much otherwise it can bite the webbing between your thumb and index finger if you've got large hands (which I do.)
Also you've got to be aware of your hand placement because of the gas system.
I already destroyed a pair of shitty Mechanix gloves I have because my hand was too close to the gas system.
I will say the massive muzzle brake makes recoil extremely manageable for a rifle firing 8mm Mauser.
